Ovulation test: when to start and how to use it

Use the start-day chart in your ovulation test instructions. When to begin depends on your cycle length and the kit. A urine test detects a rise in luteinizing hormone (LH), usually before ovulation.

Which day counts as day 1?

Day 1 is the first day of your period. Count cycle length from the start of one period to the start of the next, then check the chart for your kit. If your cycles vary, check which length the manufacturer advises you to use.

What time of day should I test?

Follow the instructions for your kit, including when to test, how much to drink beforehand and when to read the result. Test strips and digital kits can have different instructions.

What if I never see a positive result?

You may miss a short LH rise between tests. A positive result suggests ovulation may be approaching but does not prove it happened. If results are hard to interpret for several cycles or your periods are very irregular, ask a healthcare professional.
